Step off of your private jet and take a golf cart up to your residence. In the foreground is the edge of the airstrip. Isla Contradora (Counting House Island) was at one time the accounting center for pearls before they were shipped to Spain. Now it is the playground for the super-rich, flying in from Panama City, Panama or arriving on their boat, catamaran or yacht. Contradora is one of four islands in the Pearl Island Archipelago that is inhabited and the only one with an airstrip.
The islands produced pearls of many colors and sizes, and during the many years when pearls were harvested from the waters around the islands, the natives would converge to Contadora to count their pearls and sell them to the Spaniards. Early last century there was an underwater epidemic which killed most of the pearl oysters, reducing the production of pearls to a dribble.
In 1980, the Iranian shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, briefly lived in Contadora. He stayed on Contradora while the U S Government attempted to find a place for him to live out his last months. Eventually, he came to the U S.
During the months of June thru October the southern humpback whales migrate to the waters surrounding Contradora to give birth to their young. Whale watching during that time is incredible.
