A male southern humpback whale hangs straight down into the Pacific Ocean singing to attract a female partner. In the waters around the Pearl Islands of Panama during the months of July-October there are approximately 1100 whales mating and giving birth. Whale watching experts believe that the singing male uses this technique to find a mate. We watched this whale for over fifteen minutes from a safe and undisturbing distance. He eventually slipped away without attracting any other whales. This day of whale watching we observed over 30 whales, but no other flat flukes.
