Three bald eagle eaglets peer over the edge of their nest. One parent is sitting just above the image keeping watch on them, while the other is flying above the Colorado River in search of food.
These eaglets have just recently been born, probably about ten days ago since they can hold their heads up, and will occupy this nest for about twelve weeks. During that time the parents (who mate for life) will alternate the protective and food searching duties. The eaglets will rapidly gain weight and start getting the feathers. By the time they start flying they will be the size of their parents. It is possible the weakest of the threesome will not survive the nesting period. As the nesting period ends the eaglets turned fledgling will be the size of the parents and weigh a pound or two more than the parents. During the initial flight training there is a forty percent mortality rate.
The parents became very agitated when I got closer than 150 yards to the nest. Needless to say keeping my distance is important to the wellbeing of the eaglets. I will continue to chronicle this event from a distance that pleases the parents.
