This image was captured between Fruita and Loma, Mesa County, Colorado near the Colorado River, with a Canon 60D using a 300mm lens.
The resolution at liftoff is to find food. This immature bald eagle, Haliaeetus leucocephalus, sat for over two hours on his perch as I waited for this shot. As I watched him the white feathers of a 2 to 3 year old bald eagle were visible. Probably in another year his head will be white and more easily recognizable.
These beautiful birds are very common in Alaska but their number in the lower forty-eight states was decreasing until they became a protected species. Illegal hunting, pesticides and the encroachment of humans led to the dwindling numbers. However, the protective work of the federal and state wildlife agencies and concerned citizens has help increase the population in the lower forty-eight states. They are usually found along river and stream banks, perched high in a tree watching for their next meal. Their primary diet is fish.
The Bald Eagle or the American Eagle is the symbol of American freedom and is our national bird.
