Three young Embera Drua Indian boys play the international game of soccer or football. The boy in the yellow loin cloth has just made a heel pass to the boy in the middle, just a little off the mark. Their pitch or field is the center square of their village. They play barefooted and wear only the loin cloths. This area is used for all the social activities in the village, dances, weddings, games and group gatherings.
This village is approximately 2.5 hours from Panama City, Panama via car and canoe. This village is the last of four or five that have been established along the Chagres River, which flows into Lake Alajuela.
The U. S. Peace Corps has one member living in the village and has helped with their school and enhanced their tourism marketing. The villagers make hand woven basket out of the fibers in the fronds of palm trees. These baskets and other trinkets are sold to the tourists who have traveled up the Chagres River to experience the life of the Embera Drua.
Approximately 150 persons live in this village. They elect their leadership council, currently led by a woman, as president or chieftess. Additionally, they have a vice president, treasurer and marketing coordinator. Besides speaking their native language, Spanish and English are also spoken by many of the villagers.
