This is the Black Christ or Black Jesus of Portobelo, Panama. The statue is housed in glass and wooden enclosure in the Iglesia de San Felipe, Church of Saint Felipe in Portobelo.
The exact origins of the statue are long gone since all the church records were burned in when the pirate Henry Morgan sacked the town in 1671. There are numerous stories as to how the statue got to Portobelo but the only thing historians agree on is that the statue was made in Spain in the 1500's.
Annually, on October 21, the Festival de Christo Negro is held in Portobelo and pilgrims from all over the Caribbean, Panama and Central America flock to Portobelo for forgiveness. The Black Christ is the patron saint of criminals, burglars, robbers, and thugs. During the festival many criminals seeking forgiveness come to Portobelo hoping for a new life. The statue is removed from the secure enclosure and paraded throughout the village.
