A bald eagle, Haliaeetus leucocephalus, also known as an America Eagle, lift offs from a tree branch along the Colorado River near Fruita, Mesa County, Colorado. The Bookcliff Mountains are in the background.
The bald eagle is easily recognizable by its white head and is the national bird of the United States. The bald eagle has flourished in Alaska but until recently had diminishing numbers in the lower forty-eight. However, thanks to state and federal wildlife agencies and conservation groups the American Eagle is making a tremendous comeback. Shooting, pesticides and human encroachment caused their numbers to dwindle in the lower forty-eight. But now they can be spotted near rivers, streams, and the shores of lakes as they search for fish, the staple in their diet. They usually nest high in the trees, making nests that can weigh over 1000 pounds.
The term bald eagle comes from an old English expression where "bald" means white headed not hairless, as it means today.
