This Krider Hawk, a type of Red Tailed Hawk, Buteo jamaicensis kriderii, is perched on a tree branch seeking a rodent or some other small creature for a meal. He is give me a real hawk eye look, probably wondering what that black thing is around my neck.
This image was captured in Horsethief Canyon, along the Colorado River, near Fruita, Mesa County, Colorado. The temperature was about 5 degrees F, but the sun was out and there were very few clouds. When he flew away it wasn't to capture food, it was to a new perch a half mile away. Image taken with a Canon 60D, 300mm lens.
