The roadrunners (genus Geococcyx), also known as chaparral birds or chaparral cocks, are two species of fast-running ground cuckoos with long tails and crests. They are found in the southwestern and south-central United States and Mexico, usually in the desert. Some have been clocked at 20 miles per hour (32 km/h) while a few have also been clocked up to 27 miles per hour (43 km/h). Allegedly road runners mate for life and are usually found in desert habitat. The red and blue spots behind the eye is an indication of the mating season.
This image was captured with a Canon 90D while sitting in my backyard watching this road runner and his mate chase each other back and forth on our property wall. Eventually they jumped down and ran to a neighbors property. This was part of our entertainment while isolated during the covid19 pandemic in Goodyear, AZ.
