Born about twelve weeks ago, this immature fledgling American Bald Eagle is now on his/her own. The other two eaglets from this nest have left, the parents are gone, and now this raptor is learning how to survive on his/her own. Image captured near Fruita, Mesa County, Colorado.
The nest this eagle was raised in was blown down during a violent wind storm. The cottonwood tree holding the nest was also toppled. One of the siblings was injured and taken to a raptor rescue center by state of Colorado wildlife officers. The survivors are now living on their own.
These magnificent birds of prey were once on the endangered species list but thanks to volunteers, state and federal wildlife officials the American Bald Eagle if regaining it's status throughout the USA. The symbol of our freedom, recognized around the world as the American Bald Eagle. It will take 4-5 years for this immature eagle to have it's white crown and tail feathers.
