These American Buffalo/Bison roam the prairie of the Bison Range in Moiese, Montana. These spectacular beasts are only a pair of many buffalo that can be spotted while visiting the Bison Range. They are shedding their winter coats getting ready for warm days of spring and summer.
In 1900 there were only 300 of these magnificent animals alive in North America. The slaughter of the buffalo not only caused the near extinction of the species but much of the livelihood and spiritual wellbeing of the Native American Indians. This wasteful exploitation was finally stopped when a coalition of Native Americans, farmers, ranchers, state and federal government officials joined forces to preserve the species. Today there are over 400,000 spread across North America.
Today, The National Bison Range, managed by the confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes is preserving the legacy of the American Bison, the King of the Prairie. A wonderful place to visit and observe Buffalo in its natural habitat.
The Buffalo is the mascot for the University of Colorado athletic department and home of "Ralphie" the most popular collegiate mascot. Go Buffs.
