Nesting American Bald Eagles 11/28/2013
This American Bald Eagle, Haliaeetus leucocephalus, was perched in a cottonwood tree along the banks of the Colorado River near Grand Junction, Colorado. As I approached the area he peered between the branches to keep an eye on me. We watched each other for about twenty minutes then the magnificent eagle flew away.
A few years ago this symbol of American freedom was on the endangered species list. However, the work of state and federal wildlife officers and dedicated volunteers have brought these birds back from the brink. They can now be found in all the lower 48 states.
