An American Bald Eagle is arriving at his nest near the Colorado river, in Mesa County, Fruita, Colorado. Once an endangered species this symbol of American freedom is now found in all lower forty eight states and Alaska. Their numbers were seriously diminished because of shooting, pesticides and human encroachment. Intense recovery programs by federal and state wildlife agencies appear to be very successful and the number of bald eagles is increasing.
The bald eagle likes to nest in the tallest trees close the top of the tree. They feed mostly on fish and can be found near lakes, streams and rivers. They grab the fish in their talons as they swoop down from their perch or from their soaring spot in the sky.
