Nesting American Bald Eagles 05/20/2014

Meet Al and Bert. These two eaglets are about two months old and in another month will be leaving the nest. Al has been popping his head up on a regular basis for about six weeks, however, Bert has been keeping a low profile and has just recently shown herself regularly. The parents still keep watch over the nest with one always near by and the other in search of food/fish by the Colorado River. Captured near Fruita, Colorado in Mesa County.

They will reach maturity in about five years, at that time they will have a white head, golden/yellow beak, and white tail feathers. Only one in ten of the immature eagles make it to adulthood. The first winter and the first attempts to fly from the nest are the most harmful to the fledglings.
