An adult American Bald Eagle, Haliaeetus leucocephalus, watches over two eaglets while waiting for his/her partner to return with a meal. The eaglets are approximately three weeks old and aren't ready to leave the nest. The nest is near the Colorado River in Mesa County, Colorado. The adult eagles take turns searching for food and guarding the young eaglets.
Approximately twelve weeks after the hatch the eaglets will become fledglings and start to fly and seek their own nests. During the fledgling stage about forty percent of the immature eagles don't survive. When they leave their parent's nest the fledglings will weight more than their parents but rapidly lose weight as they learn how to find food and snag fish in their talons.
