This American/Bald Eagle, Haliaeetus leucocephalus, is perched about four feet above his/her nest perusing the Colorado River looking for the next meal. This image was captured between Fruita and Grand Junction, Colorado in Mesa County with a Canon 60D camera.
These beautiful birds are very common in Alaska and until recently were almost extinct in the lower forty-eight states. However, the efforts of conservationists, inconjunction with state and federal wildlife agencies has brought a resurgence of the American/Bald Eagle. Prior to these efforts hunting, pesticides and human encroachment had diminished the population of this magnificent bird.
The old English meaning of the word bald meant white headed. Thus, the Bald Eagle, the symbol of American freedom around the world.
