Near extinction, this Panama Gold Frog, Atelopus zeteki, is observed in a protective environment in El Valle, Panama. It is believed that since 2007 this quarter sized toad (not really a frog) has been extinct in the wild. It has been killed of by a fungal infection called chytridromiycosis. Naturalists, zoos, the Panamanian government and interested individuals have rescued this toad and it is being raised in captivity. The San Diego, CA zoo has over 500 and is continuing to breed them for an eventual release into the wild. However, since there is no current known cure for the fungal infection the release isn't in the near future.
August 14th is Golden Frog Day in Panama is it's celebrated in the town of El Valle about two hours from Panama City. The skin of the golden frog is toxic and the indigenous Indians of Panama made tips for their poison arrows from the toxic skin.
