Two Bald Eagles/American Eagles, Haliaeetus leucocephalus, play in the sky. Is it just a game of tag, or is it romance? A dance of love performed in the blue skies above Mesa County, Colorado near the Colorado River. I watched this pair fly to the upper altitude where they were just dots in the sky and then return to just above the tree tops, diving, twisting, chasing, soaring in the sky. It must be love. The lower eagle has his/her mouth open calling to the mate, as the mate heads skyward. A spectacular site to watch and photograph.
The Bald Eagle or American Eagle is the symbol of America and our freedom. The bird is very common in Alaska and until recent years was almost eliminated in the lower forty-eight states by hunters, pecticides and human encroachment. However, the conservation efforts by concerned citizens, federal and state wildlife agencies has brought a resurgence of the Bald or American Eagle to the lower forty-eight states.
In old English the term "bald" meant white headed, thus the white headed eagle or Bald Eagle.
