Welcome to the world, mother and new baby! This is a new born American bald eagle, an eaglet, Haliaeetus leucocephalus, probably hatched about a week ago. He popped his head up yesterday (4/9/14) evening, after being huddled down in the nest. By the end of June or early July he will be leaving the nest as an immature eagle trying to survive in the world.
At this time, he is the only eaglet I've seen in the nest, named Alpha, Al for short. This way he/she could be Al, Alis, Alice, Alan, etc. Only time will tell. Eagles usually have 1-3 eggs during each nesting cycle, so there is still a possibility for a Bert and a Charlie. The nest watch will continue. Image captured in Mesa County, Colorado near the town of Fruita and the Colorado river.
