These mallards, Anas Platyrhynchos, are enjoying a quiet afternoon at a small pond near Grand Junction, Mesa County, Colorado. The pond is fed by the Colorado River where mallards and herons reside. The male mallard is readily identified by the metallic green head and neck, yellow bill, narrow white collar, and chestnut breast. The female mallard is known for her mottled plumage, an orange bill marked with black. This species is abundant and widespread throughout North America.
