This image was captured in December of 1978 in Old Delhi, India, using a Minolta SRT 101. While waiting for a colleague near a bike shop in Old Delhi this man came by and let me take his picture for one rupee. He is a believer in Jainism. Their non-violent lifestyle prevents them from killing anything. They use the mop to sweep the path in front of them and wear a facemask to prevent inhaling or ingesting anything in the air. The Jain cuisine is completely vegetarian and also excludes underground vegetables such as potato, garlic, onion etc, to prevent injuring small insects and microorganisms; and also to prevent the entire plant getting uprooted and killed.
Jainism is a religion of self-help. There are no gods or spiritual beings that will help human beings. The three guiding principles of Jainism, the 'three jewels', are right belief, right knowledge and right conduct. The supreme principle of Jain living is non violence.
