This immature, Haliaeetus leucocephalus, American/Bald Eagle is perched on a snag overlooking the Colorado River between Fruita and Grand Junction, Mesa County, Colorado. The sky was overcast and the image required a creative and different background. This reminds me of art by Native American Indians.
The immature bald eagle is mostly brown with blotchy patches of white on the tail, chest, and underwing. It takes four to five years for an adult bald eagle to reach full plummage.
The American/Bald Eagle is very common in Alaska and until recently was rarely seen in the lower forty-eight states. However, the efforts of conservationists, along with state and federal wildlife agencies, has brought a resurgence of the American/Bald Eagle to the lower forty-eight states. These magnificent birds were almost extinct in the lower forty-eight states because of hunters, pesticides and human encroachment. It is great to see that the recovery programs are working.
These birds nest in tall trees or in cliffs. They feed mostly on fish and can often be seen near rivers, streams, lakes and seacoasts.
The old English term bald means "white headed" thus the Bald Eagle, America's symbol of our freedom.
