A Rufous hummingbird seeks lunch at the flowers of a honeysuckle plant. This image was captured in Fruita, Mesa County, Colorado.
These small birds migrate annually from Mexico and Central America to the western regions of the United States. The plentiful wildflowers in the Rocky Mountains attract them. These birds will fly over 2000 miles during their migration north and south.
The hummingbird is the smallest bird in the world. It is the only bird that can fly backwards. It has the ability of hover and its wings beat at a rate of 60-200 beats per second. They have a life span of 5-6 years living in the wild.
