This image was captured near Fruita, Colorado along the Colorado River. These beauties were watching for their next meal in the river.
A bald eagle, Haliaeetus leucocephalus, leaves the perch while the other stays on alert. The term "bald" back "in the day" meant white, thus the name for the American Eagle. The majority of the species live in Alaska, but can be found throughout North America and in some northern regions of Mexico. The are most often seen near sea coasts, rivers and streams since the primary diet is fish. They nest in tall trees or cliffs. Because of human encroachment, pesticides, and hunting the Bald Eagle was almost eliminated but through intense recovery programs the Bald Eagle is growing in population. The Bald Eagle is the symbol of American Freedom.
