A great blue heron, Ardea Herodias, stands on one leg in the snow on the frozen Corn Lake, in Grand Junction, Colorado. With his wings pulled in tight, the breeding plumes wrapped closely this beautiful heron is making it through a cold Colorado winter. It isn't uncommon for the blue heron to winter in an area that is usually considered breeding grounds only. The day this image was captured there were seven other blue herons standing on the snow covered frozen lake.
