Nature Wildlife Sunsets....06/10/2013
While hiking through the desert north of Tucson, Arizona I spotted this red-tailed hawk perched on top of the blooming Saguaro Cactus. The hawk was searching the desert for a rodent or other delicacy for a meal, I was just searching for a cool photographic image.
The red-tailed hawk is the most common of the hawk family (Buteo) and is found throughout most of the the USA and Mexico. The red-tailed hawk is protected in Canada, USA and Mexico by the Migratory Bird Act.
The Saguaro cactus plant is native to southern Arizona and some northern sections of Mexico. The cactus will grow to to great heights (20 feet) during their life time. They grow very slowly absorbing water and storing it in their core slowly using it during the dry season. Saguaro can easily live more than seventy five years. The flowers bloom between April and June depending on the elevation of the plant.
